A Sunny Day for Trout

Do any of these photos need explanation?  I think not.

Ever feel that deep hunger for some fresh trout and a bottle of German Riesling, outside on a sunny porch, overlooking a secluded, scenic lake?  No?  In that case, finish your leftovers, slop down the dregs of cold, aging coffee and make it an early night.

For those who still have a pulse and a reason to live, I offer the perfect solution.  The Hacekenhaus in the tiny town of Ramsen takes a bit of time to get to, but is close enough for a relaxed lunch.  Trout is the calling card.  Salads and desserts are phenomenal, but there is even more on the extensive menu.  I went straight for the trout, with a mélange of vegetables and a thin, but luscious sauce.  It’s the orca in me that craves fresh fish.

If you’re from the southern part of the United States and used to what is usually referred to as a ‘fish camp,’ this restaurant is going to make you race back to the car to strip off those holier than thou’ jeans ‘and Suck My Jelly Roll t-shirt.  Classy is a word that leaps to mind. White tablecloths and napkins.  Attentive service.  First class food in both preparation and presentation.

But, what about the trout?  In Germany, two prominent species of trout are Brown Trout and Brook Trout.  Matter of fact, Brown Trout is often referred to as German Trout.  A rose by any other name…is delicious!  The trout the Haeckenhaus serves is almost assuredly Brook Trout.  They’re smaller than the Brown and live exclusively in brooks, steams, and lakes.  Brown Trout are first cousins to salmon and fighter pilots and move about from fresh water to salt, or wherever the female trout go.

The restaurant/hotel is in the forest.  Well marked trails abound.  Take a stroll in the forest and walk off your luscious meal.

Sunshine.  Great food.  Superb atmosphere.  Just another normal afternoon in the Federal Republic.
